Air-Ice-Ocean Interactions and the Delay of Autumn Freeze-Up in the Western Arctic Ocean

چکیده
Arctic sea ice is becoming a more seasonal phenomenon as direct result of global warming. Across the Arctic, refreezing ocean surface each autumn now occurs full month later than it did just 40 years ago. In western (Canada Basin), delay related to an increase in heat stored waters; cooling freezing point requires loss atmosphere autumn. marginal zone, and process mediated by mixing presence remnant ice, which may precondition for refreezing. The has many impacts, including increased open exposure storms, additional wave energy incident coasts, shifts animal migration patterns, extension time window transit commercial ships along Northern Sea Route. This article reviews observed trends processes responsible these trends, provides brief situ observations from Beaufort that illustrate some processes.

The Arctic Ocean Spices Up
The contemporary Arctic Ocean differs markedly from midlatitude, ice-free, and relatively warm oceans in the context of density-compensating temperature and salinity variations. These variations are invaluable tracers in the midlatitudes, revealing essential fundamental physical processes of the oceans, on scales from millimeters to thousands of kilometers. However, in the cold Arctic Ocean, te...

متن کاملOcean surface waves in an ice free Arctic Ocean
The retreating of Arctic ice edge implies that global ocean surface wave models have to be extended at high latitudes or even to cover the North Pole in the future. The obstacles for conventional latitude-longitude grid wave models to cover the whole Arctic are the polar problems associated with their Eulerian advection schemes, including the CFL restriction on diminishing grid-length towards t...
